Hi all, just wondering if you could help me decide between a couple of builds. Both are coming in at roughly the same, I've already got the 2080 Super and a couple of hard drives to move over. Both are pretty much the same except mobo and cpu which is where I'm stuck. It's basically going to be for gaming, 144hz, so no heavy video or photo editing and the like. I'm assuming the cooler will be sufficient for both.

Corsair Air 680x
Ryzen 5 5600X
Crosshair VIII
16gb 3200mhz
2080 super
850w psu
corsair h115i pro xt

OR

Corsair Air 680x
i7-11700k (or would a 10700k be better?)
Asus ROG Z590-f
16gb 3200mhz
2080 super
850w psu
corsair h115i pro xt

11700K is the better build. However, the Crosshair Hero VIII is pretty overkill. If you dropped down to a still good even X570 board for around $250-300, you could roll the cost savings into a 5900X, and then *that* would be the infinitely better build.

You also don't even remotely need an 850W PSU.

same as 10700k, 11600 would be as good.

Drop the crosshair, unless you're doing hardcore overclocking.

Spend more for everything else such as 32gb ram or better gpu.

Not really. Some games like Cyberpunk will already scale to 12c/24t, and that's likely to become the case more an more. At this point, I'd consider 8c/16t the bare minimum for a new build, regardless, since all new games from here on will likely utilize at least that, thanks to the influence of the next gen consoles.

Even if the game doesn't utilize the full 12 cores, it still gives you headroom for additional activities like streaming.

Between these two builds I would choose the 11700K..... but....

I agree with @Chris Pratt that the Crosshair VIII is unnecessary.

Even a good B550 board would be enough.

The money you save on the motherboard could be used for a 5800x/5900x or keep the money and invest in a better GPU when prices has normalized.

6 core CPU is absolutely fine but if you plan to keep the PC for 3-5 years then having 8 or 12 cores is never a bad idea.

So -

—Yeah, you don’t need an X570 or Crosshair board. This B550 board is more than good enough.
-I replaced the PSU, as you don’t need an 850W for a 2080S.

geometry is hard
b550 > x570
