Is there maybe a sticker on the computer with a longer model number? there are many differences.

Altho it looks like most Pentium 4 models come with a LGA775 socket.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

Sort of.

Pentium 4's came on 3 sockets - Socket 423, Socket 478, and LGA775.

Socket 423 got killed off quickly as it wasn't very good. Socket 478 is where most P4's ran, and LGA775 were mostly later dual-core P4's.

As for OP, don't bother upgrading your CPU. Save up to get a whole system upgrade.

Unfortunatly this might indeed be the best option.

I tried looking for some, but there are no reasonably OK CPU's for that socket. Its all so old or jsut plain to expensive to be worth anything.

I just want to upgrade this pc without any major changes but you Are right it really isn't worth the time and money which is why I am going to upgrade my Compaq presario and trash the gateway thanks
