MSI has an XMP-A and a XMP-B, maybe on your motherboard it is the other way around. Basically some RAM kits include data for two possible speed configurations. From the BIOS you can choose config A or config B. Just go with A.

What is a-xmp? Every time I go into the bios and I see the a-xmp button right next to the game boost I wonder what it does. I have looked online and I still can not find an answer. If someone knows what this setting is please tell me.

I use an msi motherboard BTW.

Current setup: Ryzen 5 3600, MSI MPG B550, 2x8GB DDR4-3200, RX 5600 XT (+120 core, +320 Mem), 1TB WD SN550, 1TB Team MP33, 2TB Seagate Barracuda Compute, 500GB Samsung 860 Evo, Corsair 4000D Airflow, 650W 80+ Gold. Razer peripherals. 

Also have a Alienware Alpha R1: i3-4170T, GTX 860M (≈ a 750 Ti). 2x4GB DDR3L-1600, Crucial MX500

Oh, in that case I didn't know my RAM kit was special and actually have two profiles. I don't OC memory so I won't bother. But yeah, just enable XMP-A to squeeze ~2% extra performance out of your system.

are there situations where I shouldn't have it enabled?

also your ram is not special a lot of other RAMS have the same 2 configs mine is just different I guess  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok cheap RAM usually doesn't have two profiles. And I'm cheap. I can't afford no Trident Z. 

 

Always enable XMP, but always lie about it and say you don't know what it is when filing a warranty. On Intel especially, answering yes to anything that raises the clock speeds above what they are when you first boot up the computer is considered an overclock and voids the warranty.

But what about game boost? that will overclock my computer but it can also be dangerous and unstable so that's why I'm asking about a-xmp to.
