Can't install OS (Win10) on new build - Gigabyte Z490 Vision G, i9-10850K

Hey everyone!

This is my first post in a computer forum ever, I hope I do it right.

I build my first computer ever and a friend helped me to pick the parts and helped with building it (from the distance via webcam). It powers on and I can enter the BIOS, but I can't install an OS. I bought Windows 10 Pro and got a USB with it, but it doesn't work. I tried to make my own Windows-install-stick with Windows Media Creator, didn't work either. I now tried to boot live-OS (Ubuntu) from the USB, but that doesn't work either.

- When I use the original Windows 10 Pro Stick: I reach some kind of "safe boot menu" which says, that I need to use my Windows CD to repair the OS (though I haven't installed the OS yet). I get different error codes with each boots, stating that a certain driver is missing E.G.: Error Code: 0xc0000221 ( qevbda.sys ), 0xc0000098 (vmbus.sys)

- When I use the Media Creation Windows 10: I get some bluescreen, but with no writing on it. Just blue.

- When I use Ubuntu-USB: It loads, but then the screen stays black with just a spinning loading circle.

I downgraded the BIOS version from F20A to F8C via Q-Flash, because I read that F20A causes issues with 10th gen CPUs - but that didn't solve the problem either....

If you need any additional info, please ask me! I would be really happy about any ideas, what I could do!

Try re-seating the RAM. Clear the CMOS with a jumper if your mainboard has that or remove the battery for half a minute with the PSU turned off.

If that doesn't work, can you try the Ubuntu USB again, but remove the "quiet" and "splash" boot options? To do that, press `E` in the GRUB menu and remove the words.

Maybe the full verbose boot info gives us something useful

In short, try simplifying your system configuration and be sure to clear CMOS after.

That means:

  1. Unplug all but 1 stick of RAM.
  2. Unplug all but the boot drive.
  3. The 10850K has an iGPU, so you might even try removing the GPU.

After you do that, try again with the various installation methods that you tried before. If you still are running into problems, try moving the single stick of RAM to different slots. If that doesn't work, try a different single stick of RAM and so forth.

When you create a bootable USB with media creation tool. You use a different PC? Why cant you make one? I would reset CMOS by removing CMOS battery for 5 mins. Remember to turn off PSU. Check that ram is seated in slot A2 B2 and then leave on default bios settings.

What do you mean with "Why can't I make one"? I made a bootable USB with media creation tool and it just gave me a blue screen...

Okay, I'll try that... though I dread having to remove the AIO in order to remove the RAM sticks 😄 I'll come back to you later, after I tried!

Speaking of CPU cooler, what CPU temps are reported in your BIOS?

They are between 50° and 60°. The friend who helped me was also surprised, that it was so hot.

Edit: I did not OC, it's like this under default

This is too hot for an idle CPU in the BIOS. I would expect 25C-45C depending on the ambient temp and the CPU model. Make sure the cooler is working properly. ie, make sure it has proper contact with the CPU, and that the pump is working.

YEAH! I removed the GPU, removed the AIO, removed all drives except the M2s, removed all the RAM sticks, removed the CMOS battery and reset CMOS, then added 2 RAM sticks in Dual mode and applied A LOT thermal paste on the CPU before mounting the pump - and now the CPU is down 10 degrees to 43°C and I was actually able to use the original boot USB from Windows! At least there is an actual installation manual showing up!

I have to get to work soon, but I'll report back later, if the issue is solved so far 😉

So, I'll try to install Windows later, get GPU drivers and then install the GPU again .

Thank everyone so much for your help, I was already really desperate and close to crying and giving it up 😄

Glad to help. It sounds like it was a CPU cooler issue, so you should be good to go now.

I'll just leave you with this:

It's still a "best practice" to install Windows with only the boot drive installed. But other than that, at this point you are probably safe to reconnect all of your hardware.

If you run into problems after reconnecting everything, the process for figuring out the issue would be to disconnect everything again, and then add things back one at a time until you discover the problematic device.
