Pretty new to monitors and just got a good deal on an Acer Nitro VG240Y SBMIIPX 165Hz display and have been using it for about two weeks now along side my old HP EliteDisplay E232 60Hz. While the higher refresh rate on the acer is really nice, I can't seem to understand why the HP is giving out a sharper image while gaming or even jus watching videos. From my understanding they are both 1080p IPS panels.

if you're running at 165Hz, the display might be doing compression to hit that refresh rate

im guessing 165Hz is listed as OC on the box...?

Correct, it is listed at that, but I changed my resolution to Ultra HD in Nvidia Control Panel which I think restricted the refresh rate to 120Hz and lower.

im guessing it's something to do with this, but im not too familiar with displays to talk about what each of these does

is the picture sharper in the ultra HD 1080p?

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Oh right! I checked these settings on my other monitor and I have them configured to use the NVIDIA colour settings. And yes, the ultra HD setting boosted the sharpness a little bit but the same as the one on the HP. Also, I have just turned off FreeSync on the monitor and it looks to have helped a little bit.
