My 400D gives me an error 99 when I use flash, so I'm taking this as the capacitor for the flash is dead now. If I were to buy a cheap flash for example this one:

Would It work? Does the hotshoe provide the flash with a signal? I have no idea how flashes work like this. If you have any idea on how I get around my dead flash tell me, cheers.

Error 99 is a generic code in that it can refer to a good many things. It can appear for no apparent reason and a quick re-boot often solves it. Error 99 also refers to communication problems between lens and camera, so worth cleaning the contacts...you can't lose anything in doing so.

Here is a repost of the link

I'm pretty sure its the flash. It says FLASH BUSY then I get error 99. I can use the camera just fine without flash.

Bare in mind, if you want it to act like the in built popup flash you need ETTL, most flashes - if not all, under <£100 are not ETTL and are manual only. So just be careful.

But, like has already been said, Error 99 on canon bodies is a generic error. Battery issue, lens issue, lens-body contact point issue, body issue, the list goes on. So i'd just carefully look around the outside of the camera, re-seat any cards/batteries, wipe off the lens contact points with the body, just a general check for dirt/dust/etc.. making sure just to give it a nice gentle clean. But that's completely up to you, you could even see if a local canon service center would give it a quick clean/maintenance check up, but they can cost.
