Most of the time it's due to an update being installed or for a while after as it cleans up, though it can also happen if something is searching for installed updates or the system is searching for updates. Typically it will finish on its own, but check if there's any updates available and install them if there are and reboot, then reboot again once it comes back up. I'd advise rebooting even if there are none available.

sfc /scannow requires an elevated command prompt to run.

Its been running for the whole day now. Whenever I try to check for updates it says

There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070424)

Check to see if the BITS and Windows Update services are started and make sure they're not disabled.

If either are missing or won't start, you can try sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt.
