motherboard chipset question & CPU

Go to solution Solved by Createinator,

First of all B85 is a budget option with fewer SATA 6Gb/s ports, lower quality Onboard Audio and no support for high frequency RAM(think 1866, 2133, 2400mhz).

Going with a 4670K is a good idea because having an unlocked processor gives you the option of overclocking it in a few years time and extending the lifespan of your rig.

It is true that a 4440 is only marginally worse than a 4670K but a 4670K will provide you an extra year and half in lifespan by overclocking.

If you are on a very tight budget buy an i5 4670K with a MSI Z87 G43(non gaming). It is a good combo and G43 has almost all the features you will need.

Hope it helps. :)

what the difference with

MSI B85-G43 Gaming Motherboard chipset vs MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Motherboard

i know the z87 is newer but is there any noticable difference? can 1 do something the other cant? is it just speed?

for CPU, with gaming id like to get the Intel Core i5 4670K but is there any real difference with going with Intel Core i5 4440

yes i know you cant overclock it and the ghz is lower but would you notice anything?

thanks

If you are going for a "k" or unlocked processor, then you need a Z87 in order to overclock properly.

If you are not going for an unlocked processor, then you will be fine with the least expensive motherboard that is compatible.

Here is a video explaining how motherboards don't affect performance.

"I genuinely dislike the promulgation of false information, especially to people who are asking for help selecting new parts."

The two chipsets will perform nearly the same for everything, except SATA and overclocking. The Z87 is recommended if you are going to be overclocking. ASRock does make a B85 overclocking board if you want that.

If you aren't going to get the 4670K, then you might as well buy an AMD FX part

[AMD Athlon 64 Mobile 4000+ Socket 754 | Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro nForce3 | OCZ 2GB DDR PC3200 | Sapphire HD 3850 512MB AGP | 850 Evo | Seasonic 430W | Win XP/10]

thing is, its not for me and i doubt he (firend) would ever overclock it, so might be worth it going with 4440, unless that might bottle neck lets say a 780, but then again the 4670k wont be overclocked so

I am sure an i5 won't bottleneck a single 780. Even if your friend is not going to overclock right now, buying an unlocked processor makes sense because you can extend the life of an old CPU by overclocking. Nowadays overclocking is as easy as clicking 5 times.

If you still do not want to overclock, consider an FX6300 or an FX 8120 with an AMD 990X motherboard. That will be fairly cheaper than buying an i5 and B85 motherboard combo.
