Budget (including currency): a flexible (but as conservative as possible) $2000 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Heavy office/communication loads including zoom, some serious graphical editing (I work with Final Cut Pro a lot), and some gaming (I'm thinking prioritize the work side of things).

Other details

I was putting together a parts list on PC Parts Picker and just wanted to see if any of you more knowledgeable folk have any tweaks or suggestions.

My build ideas:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X1
  • Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus (WiFi) (I know, it's a bit overkill, but I'd rather plan for down the line upgrades)
  • G.Skill Trident Z 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200 CL16
  • Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB M.2 2280 NVME SSD2
  • NVIDIA RTX 3070 (It's a long shot, but I'm ready to wait)
  • Fractal Design Meshify C
  • Corsair RM 750W Modular PSU

1On the AMD Ryzen 7 - What are your thoughts on the stock cooler? Should I budget in a different one?

2Debating whether to do 1TB M.2, 2TB M.2, or a mix of M.2 and SSD

I've got some ideas on peripherals as well but I'll save that for later... I've been saving for a while now and want to be confident before I start. Let me know what you think.

Then also wait for 5800X. Not worth it to trickle down because the entire zen stack doesnt have an igpu except on the entry level.

Im more of a Focus G girl on the fractal design lineup, but its decent. Other case to consider is 275R airflow from Corsair.

Depends on how much speed and storage ratio you want. I personally cant find any form of advantage of full nvme setup beyond heavy video editing, so i would go for 1TB nvme with mixes of few TB HDD and cache it with a smaller nvme ssd.

If you can, get one that fits you by shopping in physical location (or abusing amazon refunds, if you dare)

But as far as i can tell, you did okay for 2k build. But if you do mostly work, i would step down to a 1-1.5K build and still have okay gaming experience if you dont care about max settings on the latest game all the time.

What chipset would you recommend? You think the threadrippers are the way to go?

Hell no. At that CPU youre going to talk 3-4 grand minimum and its also looking bleak considering that the limit will be the fact that we are transitioning to DDR5, not AMD itself wanting new socket. And imo B550 offers the right bang for the buck if youre going for futureproofness (forgot to say that, oop)

Good to know. I was looking at B550s and I'll make some adjustments around DDR5. Thanks.

I hope financially, because DDR4 and 5 are not cross compatible and will require new board, CPU and Memory.

Thank you for the tips. This offers a ton of insight I needed.

I was just trying to say that do not buy an expensive mobo if you do not need it. your upgrade path is limited because AM4 is at the end of its cycle (soon).

Would you recommend the 7 5800X or the base 9? Just wondering a they're around the same price point, more cores or more optimized?

Sorry, Typos and clarification.
