Good evening!

Apologies I'm rather new to this forum, but I'm just curious to know what potential GPUs I could upgrade to, since my setup is getting rather old now (I'm talking 2015 hardware) so... I'm looking at upgrading at some point. I've heard that supposedly I could use a 2070 or a 3070 because of backwards compatibility to a PCI-E 1.6 slot, but I honestly haven't got the foggiest of clues whether or not that's true, nor do I have the funds to actually test that.

For the record, I currently am using a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3 ATX motherboard and an MSI GTX 970 OC edition.

I'm aware that my i7-6700 will bottleneck any high-end GPUs, but that's not too much of an issue for me right now.

What's your monitor? Your CPU isn't really a bottleneck

the GPU upgrade will probably be to whatever is available used at a decent price in your local area.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

It has a pcie 3.0 16x slot. It can support basically any gpu, assuming your power supply is big enough

The Z170X has PCIe 3.0 x16 slots.

It will work fine with PCIe 3.0 and 4.0 cards.

When I looked at my board it does specifically say PCIe 1.6

I have tried using a 1080 (as a friend gave me his old one which does work, as I was the one that installed it, and replaced it for him with a 2070 super) but I'm getting nothing from it.

I'm using a 650w PSU, by the way

PCIe 1.6 does not exist.

Quote
  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
    * For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
  2. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x8 (PCIEX8)
    * The PCIEX8 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16 slot. When the PCIEX8 slot is populated, the PCIEX16 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.
  3. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)
    * The PCIEX4 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX1_3 slot. When the PCIEX1_3 slot is populated, the PCIEX4 slot will operate at up to x1 mode.
  4. 3 x PCI Express x1 slots
(All of the PCI Express slots conform to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)

PCIe 3.0.

What exact 650W PSU is it? It may not be strong enough for the 1080.

How old is it?
On the PSU tier list it's listed as Tier C, which isn't the best.

I got it in December as a birthday present, so it's only a few months old. I was originally running a Corsair VS-450 PSU when I first built my PC.

Did you connect the PCIe cables to the 1080 when it was installed, and/or connect the display cables to the GPU instead of the motherboard?
I know, I know, but it was the solution for someone once.

I slotted the 1080 into where I had previously had my 970 installed, plugged the PSU into it, and plugged my DP cable directly into the GPU.

Are you able to try other display cables?
DisplayPort can be finicky sometimes.

I have tried. All I kept getting (I tried a HDMI too) was a black screen. The PC would turn on, but no display was given. The GPU would turn on and ramp up but then turn off after a few seconds.

I could potentially try it again, as it may be possible I didn't plug the PSU into it correctly with the 1080..

But I'd need to wait until I'm home from work.

You sure the board doesn’t say pcie 16

that would make a lot more sense, as gpu slots have 16 lanes

OK! So an update to this:

I got home an hour ago, I've tried each display port on the GPU with multiple cables, and it's still not giving me a display. I have uninstalled my GPU drivers for my 970 to see if that makes a difference, and nothing. Which, again is odd since it works in my friend's PC (he lives next door) yet it doesn't with mine. The only difference in our builds is he USED to have the same power supply I have, but upped to a 800w PSU, and now has a 2070 super. Is there anything I can do?

EDIT!

Nevermind, I got it to finally work. I restarted the system a few times, and swapped between HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 on my monitor a few times. That seems to of somehow fixed it.
