System shuts down randomly

I have been running without problems for the last few days on the original config.

It restarted again, so i had an idea. I swapped the motherboards and checked the socket. I found some bent pins and one broken pinhead.

According to the 1150 intel spreadsheet the broken one is G10 (PEG_RXN5) which is used for PCI Express Receive Differental Pair. (it would make sense)

The other 2 pins that are a bit weird are M17 (VCC->Ground) and B4 (VSS->Ground).

I hope i read the spreadsheet correctly, the pins are so small.

So i guess the broken pin is what caused the problem, but it is still not 100% though. I'm gonna run this system for a while and report back.

I don't know if these pins still in contact with the cpu, so it is just a wild guess but seems logical to me. The bitlocker shutdown problem is also gone, it does not enter a restart loop and shuts down corretly.

Hello Folks!

I’d like to ask for your help regarding my issue that the title suggests.

I am mining whilst my system is idle or not doing anything special. I've been doing it for almost a month now. The problem was not apparent at first. At random times my system just shuts down. I am suspecting the psu, since it has temp protection (afaik at 50C it shuts down), and the fans does not turn on until 240W of total load. GPU is undervolted and clocked down for mining, so it only takes 80W thus the fans of the PSU does not even start.

I have been mining with the gpu for 30-40 hours without problems before turning off the pc, but today it shut off again after ~40 hours.

One time after a similar shutdown i used OCCT to stress test the gpu on 100% and it shut down instantly.

Sometimes it also shuts off randomly when i'm on the bitlocker screen, but it is rare.

I did not notice any other weird behaviour except these.

My specs:

i7-4790k (stock@4Ghz)

ASUS Z87I-PRO

Kingston HyperX 2x8GB 1600mhz

Sapphire RX580 Nitro+ Special Edition

Samsung 860 EVO 500gb

Corsair SF600 Platinum

I have no ways of identifying the issue, since there are no errors only some windows event logs that says the system shut down unexpectedly.

I'd like to hear your opinion about it.

Thank you for your time!

Sounds like the PSU is tripping out on its internal protections. What are the full system specs, as well as the make and model of the power supply?

I bought the power supply second-hand, but almost new condition (barely used). I bought it in 2019 may, and the previous owned bought in Feb if i'm right.

The MB was used for some time before me, i do not know for how long. I bought it in 2018 December.

Alright. Was suspecting possibly the power supply was on it's way out.

Can you check with another power supply to see if the system doesn't shut down??

I have an FSP Hexa 400W to test with. But only one case i have on hand accepts ATX sized psus. This is the case i'm using rn, and it mounts the PSU behind the CPU cooler so the cables block the PSUs intake, thats why i thought about the thermal limitation. Anyway I put a fan next to the psu to help ventillate it without the side panel.

Should i just test the system straight up with the other psu?

I would just test it with the other PSU just to rule out it's not a faulty PSU. Just plug it in on the side and connect the proper connections to get the system to run.

Okay, i'm on it. Will report back later.

Since this problem comes after days sometimes, what do you recommend? Should i just do what i did on the current psu (so the same load and usage)?

Yes, I would try and recreate the scenario the PSU is shutting down on.

Just shuts down ... and restarts ? Or shutdowns and doesn't let you ever to start the PC again until you cycle the power switch on the PSU ? If it's the former then it's not a PSU issue, because if it was any PSU protection then it should've latched itself off. Check your RAM.

Shuts down, and after a 0.5-1 second delay it turns back on without me interacting with it. I also hear the relay clicking when shutting down and when turning on as usual. The same happens if i turn the psu switch to 0 then turn it back on to 1, the computer starts again without me pressing the power button.

Thank you, good piece of info. Should i do a memtest?

Might be that the GPU isn't stable at undervolt ? Try raising the voltage a bit. Also, check the PSU cables for damage (melted plastic, charring on contacts).

That might be the case, since both core and mem is at 850 mV. I’m raising it by 10mVs at a time. I don’t remember correctly, if the driver can handle the card being unresponsive and sets the values back to default. I’m gonna check this today so we can rule out the undervolting issue.

However it shut down immedately once while i tried gpu stress test with default values. This was after the weird restart.

I tested it, even if i undervolt it too much the card just hangs, the screen freezes and after 10 sec the driver sets default values back and everything is back to normal. No restart or anything.

I think is the oc not stable or the power in you room is not clean. In day time the voltage in my room is not stable I have to lower mem oc to +1550, also mining at back ground while watch YT also cause this problem.

I did not have any previous problems regarding voltage. The accepted fluctuation (long and short term) with our provider is ± 10% at 230V. So in theory it could also be a factor.

Only the memory is OCd but undervolted, and the core is undervolted and underclocked. Core: 1150mHz@850mV Memory: 2100mHz@850mV.

Symptoms happened with default settings too, and also at a completely different location. So most likely the problem wasn't regarding this, but a very good guess. I wouldn't even think about this, thanks for mentioning it.

I suggestion is you don't use the pc when you mining and turn of the monitor.  I used a ups and it doesn't do anything but if I turn off monitor it will become at +1550 mem oc stable.

I switched to the igpu, so the dgpu works independently

My advice is to set the board to factory default, pull the second gpu and try running on the igpu.

If i pull the dedicated gpu from the pc, i won't have the means to put the system under load i guess. Or am i starting to miss the point here? I feel like i'm groping in the dark with this issue.
