In home office:

Working laptop:

Lenovo ThinkBook 15 Ryzen 5/16GB/512/Win10P. It's my main work tool. 90% of time I work from home, but sometimes i have to go to datacernter, or ofice in my workplace. Moreover it allow me to separate my home network from company network (VPN).

PC:

3 FHD monitors

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz BOX
MB: MSI Z77A-G45
Coler: SilentiumPC Fera Pro HE1224
RAM: Corsair DDR3 2x4096MB 1600MHz CL9.0

HDD - 2TB Baracuda
SSD: MX500 SSD 500GB

GPU:XFS RX580

Case:SilentiumPC Gladius M40

PSU:GPS-1250C ( i know it's  beast, but I bougt it used, very cheap...)

I'm a linux administrator.

So far i used to use my PC to connect to laptop over RDP. It allow me to use 3 monitors, mechanical keyboard and my razer mouse which are connected to my PC to work on laptop comfortably.

PC <=eth=>switch<=poe_eth=>accesss point<=wifi=>Laptop

Problems to solve:

  1. Sometimes latency of my connection between PC and laptop jump from 1ms to 100+ms. Its very annoying when worting with terminal...
  2. I do not have any backups of my laptop (500 GB ssd). I would like to create 2 backups of my laptop every day. First by creating VM from my LAPTOP with Disk2vhd (if something wrong happen with laptop i will be able to work with VM), and store this VM image on my PC. Second backup will be usefull only in case of ssd failure and it will be created by "Synology Active Backup for Business". If my laptop died, I will be able to work from VM...
  3. I would like to add some cameras aroud house.
  4. I would like to add to my home some smart IoT devices which will be accessible over VPN.

I would like to point out that, as you can see, I do not like to modernize my computer often 🙂 Hence the decision to use a bit more powerful equipment than my requirements indicate.

My plan is:
Update my old pc:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 oem/tray
CPU Cooler: SilentiumPC Fortis 3 140mm
MB: Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2
RAM: HyperX 32GB (2x16GB) 3733MHz CL19 Fury Black
Case: be quiet! Silent Base 601 orange + 2x be quiet! Pure Wings 2 PWM 140mm
GPU - reuse RX580 and update in better days...
PSU - reuse GPS-1250C

SSD - reuse MX500 SSD 500GB

Update NAS:

synology ds920+
4x Seagate IRONWOLF CMR 4TB 5900obr. 64MB SHR2

What I do not know will it work:
Will ds920+ link aggregation work with 2.5 Gbps NIC in Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 over 30m eth.cable? in setup ds920+ <=2 x eth cat5e cables=> sg102-24 <=eth cat5e=>Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 2.5Gb NIC?

Will I be able to create a hot-spot on Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 and use ax wifi on pc and laptop to transfer data with 2,4Gbps speed ?

Id just backup the laptop with tools like veeam or make a image, no need for disk2vhd, adds work with no benfit.

You can boot that image in a vm if needed.

Don't do link aggregation, do smb multichannel. Should be able to hit 2gbps that way, and no switch config needed.

Your not getting 2.4gbit over wifi, but yea ac and ax can connect, and will negotiate to ac.

How are you measing this latency?

Im guessing its the computers not the network here, but could be a bad switch in the middle.

Thanks for Your time. I do not know veeam - I will check it. What distinguishes veeam image from Disk2vhd image ?

As far I know, SMB multichannel is not supported in synology...

This laptop and MB use Intel ax200 - both are AX not AX and AC...

There is only cisco sg102-24 and Cisco AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 between those devices,
