so if i upgrade the battery in my phone to a higher capacity, will the phone auto detect the change and set 100% to the new capacity? or is there something i need to do to make sure it works as intended?

It is generally not a good idea to put non-certified batteries on your phone. Especially now with fast charging and the works, when companies make charging circuits and software specifically for the one battery and phone.

However if you find a battery that other users have said to have installed and to be working properly, I see no reason why not to do it. However be extremely careful, read and ask as much as you can, and then do what you want to do.

Keep in mind that a faulty battery can straight up blow up in your phone, and the cost to buy a new one, not even thinking about other damage, will not be worth the risk to have some extra battery.

I wouldn't. Especially with something you keep close to your body. Lithium batteries aren't nice when they explode.
