Need help to improve boot-time

Hi.

I'm looking for insight as to why my computer is slower than suspected, even after fresh install of windows 10.

My main complaint is the boot-time, which is about 50 seconds at the moment.

The computer is from 2015, and have been used to simple gaming such as CS:GO, but mainly as a workstation for studies.

My computer consists of the following:

- Motherboard: Asus z170 deluxe

- CPU: Intel I7 6700k

- CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D15s

- PSU: Corsair RM850x

- Storage: Corsair Force MP600 1tb installed to on-board M.2 slot (not with the pcie expansion card that also comes with the motherboard).

- GPU: Radeon HD7950

- Memory: 2 x Kingston DDR4 2133 mhz 8gb

- BIOS version: 1302

- OS: Windows 10 pro

My knowledge of BIOS settings etc is very limited, I only tried to change settings such as Asus auto performance tuner and XMP memory, without any good results.

Any advice on how to improve boot-time speed and speed in general are welcome.

Applications you install will load up automatically after startup by default. Go into Task Manager and click on start-up and any applications you see there that don't need to start by default, right click them and select disable. Try this and see if it makes a difference

What all do you have installed on the machine?  Windows 10 alone on an SSD, even with old CPUs, will still be sub 20 seconds.

I did as you adviced, and I also successfully installed the latest BIOS update. The version it was running was one of the first ones I figured.

Now I am down to 20ish second boot-time, which is much smoother than 50.

I am not sure if I will figure out any way to make it even faster, but I will also be happy with this result.

Thanks for the help!

At the moment I only installed chrome after the fresh Win10 install. The computer has nothing else on it at the moment. The logo sequense upon booting takes 5 seconds or so, are there any options to disable this? (I mean the Asus motherboard logo)

In the BIOS< there's a Fast Boot option (or similar).

Otherwise that's the BIOS flash screen as it does thru checking things, but that's not impacted by your CPU/SSD.

I'm more concerned why your machine is taking time on the Windows part.  If you truly have nothing installed except Chrome, boot should take 15 seconds or less.  Do you have USB flash drives plugged in to the machine, any server drives mapped, etc.

When you say 50 seconds to boot up, are you talking about the Windows log in screen or fully into Windows?

After performing a BIOS update just now, the boot time lowered to 20-25 seconds. I mean from pressing the power-button until the windows login screen appears.

I have nothing more connected to the computer except keyboard and mouse, monitor, headset and a backup keyboard.

Ill do some more testing to validate boot time

That may be the extent then, since there's nothing else to do.

I don't know my full boot time, since hitting the Windows screen is fast but then I have to wait for programs to load.  Or I can start my machine, use the bathroom, then login and things are ready.  Either way, things take time to load.

6 of one, half dozen of another. *shrug*

I am getting constant boot time of 27 seconds, and loading after typing the password is instant.

It may not be optimal, but I am happy with the improvement.

Thanks for the help!

I have the same motherboard as you with a 7700K with XMP default settings and around 7 drives, bootup time usually takes that long for me. I gave up trying to improve boot times as this board does take a while to bootup. Hope this helps.
