I heard that a hdmi cable is used when you don't want to use an external display for the laptop. Can you use a rtx 2080 as an external gpu for a laptop and

connect the hdmi cable plug to the 2080?Will it give the same perfomace as an external display and have the same fps?

it depends on how are you going to connect it. Thunderbolt or the more "DIY Opening the laptop" way?

in Thunderbolt you can notice a little of a performance degrade but not by much if you do watch videos about Thunderbolt eGPU. and it's more plug and play than opening the laptop.

If you are going to connect outside of an NVME Port and say NGFF or Mini PCIe, you'll notice that your gpu isn't going to use it's full power here, and the odds of it even working even in NVME is usually mixed.

oh and yes it will work via HDMI or DisplayPort as long as you get the eGPU dock working and yoy should usually notice no difference

yeah I just want to know how are you going to connect the gpu on your laptop, is it with thunderbolt or the other way (the DIY one), because those do have a performance different but it is very dependant and as I said, you will notice a little performance degrade if you are plugging from thunderbolt and even NVME if it is the other way that is. If outside of those then you will notice a performance loss on a 2080 due to bandwidth.

but if you are connecting on HDMI then there should be no performance loss otherwise most likely
