So, I recently realized that my older Xeon machine was hammering my UPS. It's an older 900VA, 500 watt unit, and in addition to the PC itself, I had monitors, networking equipment, and some other misc things plugged into the battery.

I have a 1500VA 900W UPS for my gaming PC, and it's newer, but not 'brand new'. So, I decided to buy a third UPS, a second 1500VA 900W unit for my gaming PC, and rearrange everything.

So, I now have one UPS for my gaming PC and it's one monitor, a second UPS for my server and it's monitor, and a third UPS with two monitors and all of my networking equipment plugged in to it.

Can I run a USB cable from my server to the third UPS to monitor it? Or is it going to cause problems if the power goes out for automatic shutdown?

All three UPS are CyberPower brand UPS.

From my experience with the Cyberpower software their desktop version is only intelligent enough to recognize one UPS at a time. Windows will show you two (Battery 1, Battery 2) but you won't be able to control it without disconnecting one or the other.

If the Cyberpower software at any time decides to recognize the other UPS instead of the primary it's possible it might initiate a shutdown but I can't say that for sure. It might be fine. You'll have to test it but nothing will go kaboom if you plug both USB cables in. :3

Ah, was a bit afraid of this.

I guess I'll use the onboard LCD for status. I can use HWiNFO64 to monitor, but only the software seems to want to be able to control the shutdown time...

I mean, as I said you should (at least from what I saw work on Windows Server 2016) be able to monitor the status of both batteries within Windows it's just if they're both Cyberpower and use the same software that software is only going to take commands from one or the other and it doesn't show you both.

Then it's entirely possible after a restart it might connect to the opposing battery (the one you don't want it to turn off using) and...yeah...

I was in a similar circumstance with some rack-mount Cyberpower batteries except in my application it didn't matter which battery reported to the Cyberpower software since the server ran off both batteries at the same time. 🙂

I think I have the perfect solution: Build a third PC.

Yeah... I'll just run the Xeon off the third UPS again, and then I can manage it that way. Easy answer. 😄

You could go the exorbitantly over-priced route and buy a mini-redundant PSU then run your server off both batteries. :3

Or build a 3rd PC for the same price. The choice is yours. 😄

lol I actually have a planned build for a 5950X, 6800XT, and such. Gaming, rendering, and awesome, all in one box.

The server isn't in a server case. It's actually my old gaming PC, but I upgraded it by pulling the i5 4440 out and replacing it with a Xeon. I already had maxed the memory out. It's going to get some WD Red Pro or WD Gold drives and get turned into a NAS, while being able to run some mining on the side. It's also my print server.

I'm still waiting for camera gear, too. >_>

I'm in need of new GPU's for my rig but the whole chip shortage but a real damper on that. 😢

Waiting on a CPU for my latest server but I've been having a god awful experience sourcing them off eBay.

Also the camera in my phone died and now I'm working with a very old 4:3 aspect ratio 3MP camera for taking pictures of things. It works but it's not great.

If this wasn't the issue, I would have a 6800XT, a 6800, and a 3060 right now.

As it is, I have none of them yet. But, here's hoping that some stock comes up sooner or later. Hell, if I could get a 6900XT at MSRP, I probably would.
