I recently lucked out, and by that I mean I got into a 115 day long waiting queue, and managed to buy a MSI Suprim X RTX 3080 at MSRP. I'm quite obviously super happy about it, but the performance I'm getting is much lower that other people with comparable rigs are. It's currently plugged into a 1080p, 60Hz display which I know should be no problem for the card and I'm planning an upgrade to a 1440p, 240Hz one very soon.

I'll leave my full specs below and when taking those into account, numbers like barely hitting 300 fps in CS:GO and 70-80 in Warzone don't really make sense to me (both games at ultra and 1080p). The only thing I can think of that may be the cause of this is my RAM, which is a single stick of 16GB running at 2133MHz. My build was unfortunately originally put together by a semi-competent system integrator, hence the terrible RAM situation. If you have any ideas or suggestions on how to increase my frames, I'd love to hear them!

My specs:

I7-6700

RTX 3080

16GB, single-channel, 2133MHz RAM

MSI PC MATE B-150 (quite tragically, this only supports 2133MHz RAM)

In 3DMark's Time Spy I'm getting an average of 15,181 GPU score and a 3,801 CPU score

Cheers and thanks for your time!

Your machine exceeds the possible refresh of your current and proposed monitor.

While that's true in CS, it's only barely above 60 in Warzone in 1080p and that might not be the case in 1440p. Also, as LTT have established, it's worth it to have more fps in CS than your monitor can handle.

Also also, that doesn't really explain the significantly lower performance than expected.

To be honest your ram, motherboard cpu really don't seem to be adequate choices for this gpu,  and I'm kinda surprised it even runs with the unknown psu...

Basically a complete refresh is needed, i think!

I think so too!

By the way, my psu is 850W, so quite adequate for my current combo

If its a good unit then yes, you can probably reuse it. What brand/ model is it?

It's an 80 plus gold unit from thermaltake, so it's definitely goint to hold up.

My main problem is that in some games neither my CPU nor my GPU are working hard and I can't really find what the problem is. Can it be a RAM bandwidth bottleneck?

In my understanding, when a CPU is not working to it's fullest potential, it's because of the RAM, right? If not, what might be the cause? Quick disclaimer: all my drivers are super up to date so it's most likely not them

I agree that's a bit odd, you'd think either cpu or gpu (well not really gpu) would go near 100% *if* there's a problem,  it's still a bit of an odd combo and the ram is slow,  that could make a 10-20fps difference maybe but I'm not sure it explains the low utilization.

What I would do just to test this is use Nvidia DSR set it to 1440p or even 4k ,play some games and use afterburner on screen display to watch gpu, cpu, all cores,  frequencies,  ram usage,  voltages...

To see if something changes at higher render resolution (it should) and also if you see something strange, either maxing out or low power delivery... anything.

I'll try that real soon!
