Hey guys! So I recently set up a minecraft server and it worked perfect for a while but then the server kept shutting down all of a sudden. The server just freezes and the n everyone on it gets kicked and the message "The existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host". And then the internet on my PC just turns off and if I turn it off and restart it it works fine again. So any suggestions on what the problem may be? Thanks!

Generally when it does that it means the server has either run out of memory or is struggling to keep up with the number of players on it.

Does the server console contain any "Is the server overloaded? Running [x] ticks behind schedule." messages at all before it freezes?

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

I don't believe that could be the issue, as if the correct port wasn't open then players would be unable to join in the first place.

Yes it does sometimes but not all the times, but there's mostly 3-6 players on it and i have set max 2GB and min 1GB ram for the server. Is that enough?

No not really. In general you probably need 4GB of RAM for that number of players, possibly more.

However, other things you can try include:

  • Use better optimised server software such as Spigot
  • Set up your server to do things like automatically clearing dropped items every few minutes or restarting automatically every few hours
  • Reduce the entity cramming gamerule
  • Minimise use of redstone

Okey imma go and change it to 5 GB of ram to be sure. But what is Spigot?

Spigot is an open source server software. People generally use it because it's a bit better optimised than the stock one, and also because it has a wide range of plugins and stuff that.

You might want to give it a go if you're still having issues.

It's a bit of an involved process to install it unfortunately but you can find details here: https://www.spigotmc.org/wiki/spigot-installation/
