It's pretty typical for switching graphics systems to stop working as they are proprietary systems that rely on the laptop manufacturer to release working drivers. But when the laptop reaches it EOL the manufacturer doesn't need to support the machine anymore.

Provided your lag spikes are not related to a different piece of hardware being accessed or used then i'd simply do a system restore to a point when the laptop was working and make sure to set it to no longer update so it can last a bit longer software wise before replacing it

I had similar frame and driver issues on one of my old HP machines. Turn the laptop over and look for a serial number that will look like 15-r008na. Go to the HP Drivers and Support website and then search for that code. It might give you the option to auto detect the drivers, don't do that, it causes more harm than good.

Go to: Official HP® Laptop Drivers and Software Download and enter your devices serial number in the box, then click search.

Once you've entered the serial number, you should be on a page like this: Scroll down to where it says Driver-Graphics and click to open the menu.

Select the most recent release of the driver that applies to your system. In this case it will probably be the NVIDIA driver, but you can also try the Intel driver too.

Once the driver has downloaded just follow the steps to overwrite the drivers already on your system, as they will be causing your issues. If you do need to download the drivers ever again, do not go directly to Intel or NVIDIA for them, as the HP website is the only place you can find drivers that are specific to your system.
