Hello everyone,

First post here. I'm having problems with my 5ghz network. I can see the 5ghz network, however, it is either very slow or indicates: "no internet connection". I live in an apartment complex, so I've already found the least populated channels. I can see all the other 5ghz networks from my neighbors but mine just doesn't work or is way slower than the normal 2.4 ghz network. Also the network is in the exact same room where I am so the range is not the issue.

  1. What is the make/model of your wireless router?
  2. What are the wireless settings on the wireless router?
  3. Run a wireless survey using WiFi Analyzer (from the MS Store) and post the channel output from the ‘Analyze’ page for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

1. It's a pretty old router. It's a D-link Dir-826l

2. Here are the setting:

While your 5GHz antenna is broadcasting on an independent channel, the detected signal strength is quite low (less than -80dBm). Fortunately, the 2.4GHz signal is high enough to be detected.

Unfortunately though, as you can tell, your 2.4GHz spectrum is way too crowded to be useful. There's not much channel optimization you can do here other than force a 20MHz channel width to reduce overlap with other broadcasts, although I suspect your router is probably doing that automatically already.

Is there a transmit power toggle for the wireless radios that you can change? If so, increase it for 5GHz.

Do you have clear line of site between your computer/devices and the DIR-826L? Any obstruction like walls, metal or floors will affect the signal. Can you reposition the wireless router to somewhere more central to see if that makes a difference?

The transmit power for the 5ghz signal is already set to high, so I don't think it would make a huge difference. However, I did move the router on a small table instead of leaving it on the ground and that almost doubled the signal quality. I think I will experiment with that more today. Thanks a lot 🙂

The higher the router, the better your signal strength should be. When we moved our router in to my bedroom our signal spread out much further. I can even get WiF outside, a decent distance from the house.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
