Upgrade from LG G6 - Android Phone Recommendation

Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

I'll just throw the Samsung S20 FE out there. You can get them for around $599, and it would do most of what you want.

If you really enjoy using the camera, might be worth seeing what the OnePlus 9 Pro is like (comes out on the 23rd). It'll likely be slightly north of $1,000, but if you keep your phone for a while it might be a good bet.

Some things to mention:

  • Most phones with a macro camera, the set up is absolute trash and not really worth having. Those that are decent won't work well in Canada.
  • MP is one of the last things you should focus on when it comes to a camera. Pixel size, pixel binning, sensor size all play a much larger factor in quality.
  • Faster phone navigation will simply come by having a newer SoC; anything 800 series will be snappy in comparison. You can also install custom launchers to increase the snappiness feel.

If you're on a carrier with a contract there are other deals to look at.

Hi,

I've had my LG G6 for 2.5 years now and it's starting to be very slow. I've read that it's a known issue after they've upgraded pass Android v7. The picture quality of the 13MP Camera is meh and wish to have something better. I've been trying to search for a new phone for the pass 4 hours, looking at specs and reviews but geez there are a lot of choice now days!

Currently the specs of my LG G6 are:

  • 13MP main camera
  • 5MP selfie
  • film 1080p 30/60fps | 4k 30fps
  • 32GB internal storage
  • microSD slot 200GB
  • 3.5mm jack
  • 3300 mAh battery

I wish to keep all of the above features but have an upgraded version. The main focus would be to have more:

  • Megapixels on main camera
  • Faster phone navigation
  • Film in 4k 60fps could be a nice to have
  • Perhaps a camera for macro shots could be a nice to have

I'm mostly on my computer, so I use my phone for sometimes texts/calls, take pictures/videos occasionally (that I wish would turn out greater) listen to a lot of music every day(hence the 3.5mm jack importance) and to try lots of random new apps (Why I wish to upgrade instead of revert to Android 7).

I don't need 5G as this feature make the phone more expensive. I won't game on it, so I won't need lots of RAM. No Huawei or other spying company. No iPhones.

My budget is around 1k Canadian, as I don't wish to have the best phone with overkill specs like that Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G at 2k.

Let me know if you have any suggestions, I'm pretty open minded to try new brands. Thank you!

Most newer phones would not have the 3.5mm audio port, unless you look at LG phones again, and perhaps China branded phones. If you don't need bleeding edge, perhaps the LG V60 ThinQ, good picture, audio port, good proc (SD 865). Or, as the peep above had recommended, the S20 FE, though you'd need an audio dongle to use your 3.5mm cabled IEM's.

LG G8X, V50 and V60 models should have all of what you are looking for. Megapixels is NOT the measure of camera performance. And most good macro pictures are actually taken from a main camera with OIS, not those trash dedicated macro cameras commonly found on cheaper phones.

You're probably right. The more I'm looking at the choices with what I need, the more I think I should stay with LG. I just heard they were going to stop making phones and thought I should perhaps stay away from LG but the new versions seems pretty attractive.

Thanks for the detail about macro cameras and MP. I'm honestly not too familiar with camera specs so that's interesting to hear MP isn't the variable I should be looking at. I was actually thinking of getting the Samsung S20 FE or the Pixel 4a 5G as they are very similar to the LG G6 and not too pricy. Hmm decisions...

IMO the S20FE is vastly superior to the 4a 5G.

Ended up getting the S20 FE. Really surprise how smooth and snappy the 120hz screen is. Thanks everyone for the tips!

The high refresh screen (and the mad Black Friday deal) was the main reason I got the S20FE. Not disappointed.

Anyone who says high refresh is a gimmick either has bad eyesight, or has never used it. I'm never going back.
