I know this is probably a dumb question.

But do I need a 10th gen chip to Bios update a msi z490 gaming edge wifi, so I can put the 11700k in it?

Or can I just plop the 11th gen in and boot with limited functionality to preform a Bios update? (I didn’t want to pay the extra cash for a z590 and essentially get faster usb ports out of it, as thats virtually the only thing that would change with what I plan to have plugged into it.)

I had a similar situation that worked when i put an 8600k into a brand new z390 instead of a z370. So I’m hoping this will function similarly but sorta the opposite problem.

Thanks again!

If the board doesn't have some kind of BIOS flashback no, without the correct microcode (BIOS) it won't boot at all. You can check if you need to get past the POST stage to update the BIOS in the manual usually.

Apparently msi is sending boards out with updated bios now? Amazon said they are in stock soon, so hopefully its one of those updated boards.

here’s hoping haha

They sometimes put a sticker on them saying something along the lines of "updated BIOS for rocket lake" etc when they do that.

Yours faithfully
