I did some quick research and if I understood it right, onboard video used to be on the motherboard and then it was included in the processors instead. Is that correct?

The graphics processor used to be in the motherboard, now it is in the CPU, correct.

my question(s) is if I wanted onboard video should I have made sure that was an option in the components I bought?

Motherboards without video out are uncommon, but do exist.

I suspect ASUS just expects their customers to purchase a graphics card if they're getting a motherboard of this price.

Do all Intel cpu's have onboard video and i just bought the wrong motherboard?

Most have onboard video, except the CPU's that end with an X or F.

CPU's that end with X (i.e. i9 9920X) are "extreme" level CPU's and don't have onboard video included.

CPU's that end with an F (i.e. i7 10700KF) are on the 'normal' platform and don't have onboard video too. The reasoning seems to be that there is less heat generating components in the CPU and that it's cheaper to produce (and many people don't use it).

I don't want to say I'm disappointed with the system I built but if something went wrong with my video card I wonder how I would get along without onboard until I rectify things.

That's they one thing that kinda sucks about not having onboard video, which a lot of people don't think about.

With AMD CPU's, most of them don't have onboard video (like the vast majority), which does kinda sting in times like this, where getting a graphics card is kind of difficult.

Motherboards on the Intel 'normal' platform side are very uncommon, but I guess the Maximus is just one of those boards with out it

Hey everyone,

I just built my 4th computer and I have a question about the motherboard/processor. I put a Core i9 10900K into a Rog Maximus XII Formula and while I was putting everything together I noticed there were no video ports on the motherboard. When doing my recon for what to buy I never bothered to check for onboard video because I was always under the impression that those features were kind of "standard" on higher end parts. I've never had a pc without onboard video.

I did some quick research and if I understood it right, onboard video used to be on the motherboard and then it was included in the processors instead. Is that correct?

I've checked the item description of the Core i9 I bought and I can't tell if onboard video is on it or not, so I guess my question(s) is if I wanted onboard video should I have made sure that was an option in the components I bought? Do all Intel cpu's have onboard video and i just bought the wrong motherboard? Although I have been building pcs for awhile now there is obviously much for me to learn so I look forward to the answers.

I don't want to say I'm disappointed with the system I built but if something went wrong with my video card I wonder how I would get along without onboard until I rectify things.

Thanks!

Well, I don't know what to say except return the board and get one with a displayport/hdmi

The i9 does have integrated graphics fyi.
