Best current CPU for single core performance

Sorry that this is probably such a simple topic for most on here that get's asked alot, but I come here because I'm not very technical and when researching what's best for me I just end up confused, and last time a bought a new PC (in 2015) i asked for advice here and ended up with a system I'm really happy with.

Currently I have an i7 6700k @ 4.5ghz and an MSI GTX 980Ti

I like playing resource management games, my favourites being ANNO 1800 and Banished, I also play some FPS games (battlefield, metro, borderlands ect) but my current system has no problem running those games to my liking, I'm more than happy to turn down graphics settings to get good frame rates, i'm also running a 1440P 144hz monitor.

Anyone that's played ANNO 1800 a lot will know that the game is incredibly poorly optimised and pretty much only utilizes 1 CPU thread, and once you get into a long saved game (I tend to play a single save game for 100+ hours and end up with over 100k total population) the game chugs as the CPU simply get's overwhelmed, graphics settings make no difference, from what I can tell it's all of the background for calculating how resources get moved around and from what i've read the only fix is a CPU with better single core performance, it's one of the only example where turning hyperthreading off has actually improved minimum frame rates for me.

I'm not all to concerned about price, as you can tell I keep my system for a long time so I'm happy to spend more now within reason, honestly I will likely end up replacing my motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler (if my current one a 240mm AIO isn't compatible or won't cool well enough) and storage, and keeping my PSU (a 650 watt corsair) and 980Ti as honestly it's fine for me atm, and GPU prices are bonkers here (retail for a 3080 is over $1500 AUD, scalper prices are approaching 3 grand)

is there a way I can (easily, rather than watching a heap of benchmark videos on youtube to try and find the right one) compare single core performance to my 6700K?

Run cinebench r23 single core on your 6700k, then look up 5800x in same test

Anandtech has some ST tests in their database

thank you (and mister woof) that helps alot.

you're welcome! Also probably worth looking into the Ryzen 5600X too; it's a little slower for single-threaded because the boost clock is 100Mhz slower but it's also quite a bit cheaper because it has fewer cores. Should have mentioned that earlier, it's not quite "the greatest" for gaming but still very very fast especially in ST.

The 10900f is crazy good at single thread when you set PL1 to 200W it auto clocks up, nearly as good as the 5800x... but yeah 5800x
