Problems with Rclone and OneDrive

I use Rclone to mount my OneDrive with all my Windows data in my Ubuntu partition, which works perfectly. I decided to symlink my Documents, Music and Pictures folders to their respective folders in OneDrive for easier access of the data. However, I ran into problems where all  the contents of these folders ended up getting dumped into my home folder, and therefore getting deleted from OneDrive. I managed to un-link the folders and sort out the mess, but I want to know:

  1. Why did this happen?
  2. Is there any way to accomplish this without disastrous results?
