So I recently bought and built a computer but at first it wouldn't POST so I opened it back up checked my connections and then realized it now won't even power on. I'm not sure if its my motherboard or my power supply. I've tried grounding the power on the PSU and I hear a click every time I do. And when its connected to the motherboard my case lights will turn on and stay on for about 3s before finally shutting off. I think I broke or missed something but I need help to determine what before I go buy new parts.

Motherboard - Gigabyte B460m DS3H

PSU - Thermaltake 600W 80+ Gold

RAM - 2x16GB 3000 DDR4

GPU - MSI RTX 3060 12G OC

Case - DeepCool MATREXX 50

CPU - i5-10400F

Cooler - Coolermaster H212 RGB

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance!

Check all your connections and reseat the components.

How do you not know what cpu you put in?

What cpu cooler do you have?

I didn't remember what CPU off the top of my head since I wrote this st nearly 8am and I was half asleep. Anyway it is the i5 10400F and the CPU cooler is the Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB

I've read this 100 times and didn't really determine which is which since the PSU just clicks on its own and thr motherboard only flashes lights when connected but all the connectors are connected including the 24 and 8 pin and all fan headers but it doesn't boot up.

It's probably your ram, 3000 isn't supported. Check the qvl on gigabytes website for other options.

RAM being unsupported wouldn't be the issue since it doesn't power up at all. No case fans, nothing spins up at all which leads me to believe it is the PSU, I was just double checking for a second opinion before buying and RMA'ing the one I bought already. The PSU when connected on its own (no drives, no cpu, no motherboard does not spin up when jump started like it is supposed to.

Ah, I thought the power was there.  No power at all is probably the psu.  Cheers.

After fiddling with it for a few days I learned that the surhe protector i was using somehow went bad and thus wasn't giving me power so I've now got power but nothing happens when the power button is pressed. I'm guessing this means I should RMA my motherboard?

Update:

Its finally back on but for some reason it will not post. All connectors are hooked in including all case cables, 24 pin on the motherboard, and the 8 pin for both GPU and CPU but no cigar.

I'm truly at a loss as to what part could be wrong with my computer and I'm not really sure which part to order in order to actually have a working computer but let me just briefly explain where we are at now and what I have tried thus far so nobody is confused. At the time of writing, the computer powers on and ALL fans on the computer begin spinning (GPU, PSU, CPU, case fans) and all RGB lighting kicks on. However, nothing appears on the screen and from what I've detected unless I'm doing it wrong I don't even get a POST code to see what part could necessarily be causing the issue. However, what I do know and what I have tried is below.

  • I've reseated everything that could possibly need to be reseated on my computer including the RAM, GPU, and even the CPU itself if just for some random reason that was the issue.
  • The motherboard and PSU are both brand new so unless it's a manufacturers issue and I need to RMA it (which is possible but unlikely) it shouldn't be these are faulty.
  • All other connections are correct and working fine including all the power and fan headers, the 24 pin for the motherboard, the 8 pin connectors for both the GPU and the CPU. All the SATA connectors and the SSD power connectors as well.
  • There is nothing that would be shorting anything within the system.
  • The monitors are not at fault either as I've tried different ones as well as different cord as well.
  • The CPU does not have onboard graphics and I've tried my GPU in another system and it works fine in the other computer.
  • I've tried clearing the CMOS by removing the battery and replacing it.

Anything else I could possibly try to see what is wrong? Or does anybody have any guidance as to what part I should even try replacing at this point in time?

I would start with removing everything from the pc case. Build it on the motherboard box. It's much easier to trouble shoot that way and also eliminates dumb things like a bad switch on the case.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

You can manually test the PSU outside of the chasis to see if it is delivering power at all.

When you press the power button, do the fans spin up and then stop, or do they not spin up at all?

Are there any LEDs on the MB? On higher end boards you typically see a post code diagnostic readout - on cheaper boards you still get one or more LEDs that act as beep codes.
