A few days ago, I got home from a weekend away and my computer booted up and behaved normally. The next morning, I pressed the power button and I got fans and lights turning on but no display output. I have tried unplugging everything unnecessary (drives, second RAM stick) and re-seating everything. I have also tried booting with and without the CMOS battery.

One time I tried turning the computer on with everything plugged back in and left it for a few minutes. I came back and it was in Windows, but I haven't been able to replicate that since. I still get fans and lights but nothing more.

My last upgrade was probably about 4-6 months ago. I replaced my motherboard, CPU, and RAM and it had worked beautifully until January. At that point, I was unable to restart my computer from sleep mode, but I just didn't use sleep mode and it was otherwise fine until this most recent issue.

I have no more spare parts to try, but my current plan is to buy a new PSU because I want to get a new one for when the new GPUs are available anyway. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700X (no overclocking)
  • Mobo: Gigabyte B550 AORUS PRO AC
  • RAM: G.Skill Aegis 2x8 GB 3000 MHz
  • GPU: MSI Geforce 1060 3 GB
  • PSU: Corsair CX 600 W 80+ Bronze

You have a spare gpu somewhere lying around? Or a board with integrated graphics. I would say It's probably an issue with the GPU, uhm it could possibly be an issue with the psu/ pcie cable specifically.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

Unfortunately, I don't have another GPU. I was planning to upgrade to a 3070 or 3060TI when I can find one at a reasonable price. I can get my hands on my old Intel board and CPU eventually, which has an IGPU, so I can try that before I start buying replacements.

Okay, if possible try to run it off of as many components as possible (PSU is basically a must, however), however if it doesn't work with your PSU and you know that the problem isn't with something else with the old build, it's most likely the PSU, and if it works, it's probably the GPU. I'm not very experienced with troubleshooting a GPU issue but you could probably google it, lol. Also also, try a few more different ram configurations (maybe take a different stick out, move one stick or another, just see if you can get boot by moving around the ram, or maybe even swap out the ram for a different set if you have some ddr4 lying around).

I think I tried every RAM configuration possible to no avail. I will try with the Intel board and IGPU when I get the chance to try to rule out the PSU. If it's not the PSU I'll test the GPU with that other board. Thanks for the input.

I was experienced this exact same issue and it was a mobo at the end but also it can be gpu/psu most likely but just test something when u press the power button and pc didn't post just try to hold the power button for 5 sec if it doesn't turn off it can be a mobo fault plus if u have ez debug led check it

I am able to turn off the computer by holding the power button. Interestingly, last month, when my computer wouldn't wake from sleep mode, I was unable to use the power button, so I had to shut it off with the PSU. So it is looking more and more like a mobo issue.

I think so but if u can get another psu to test that will be great

Just for fun try disconnect everything except monitor.

Plus disconnect every drive and any fans/rgb/etc i think u already tried this 😄

If still unstable when power on /restart/sleep there is very high chance to be mobo issue

UPDATE

I got my old mobo+CPU+RAM installed and it seems to work fine, so that narrows down the issue a bit.

Now I know:

  • GPU: works
  • PSU: works
  • RAM: probably works (I tested different configurations with no change, so both sticks would have to have failed simultaneously.)
  • Motherboard and CPU: untested

So, now it seems even more like a motherboard issue. I can probably test my RAM in my roommate's computer too, to eliminate that possibility. Thanks for the help, guys.
