a year ago i bought a gtx 1070 for my laptop and had a constant issue of usb ports disconnecting, i sold that gpu and without using external gpu for months the problem went away, i got a gtx 980 today and the issue has started again, the drivers keep installing by them selves and im not sure what to do. it seems other people have had this issue after installing a new gpu. how do i fix?

Laptops arent specifically design to be compatible with external gpus so the manufacturer would need to check if there a compatibility issue between your laptop and the external device and issue an update to address it.

I agree. So if theres a hardware compatibility error or an error with the firmware or drivers in relation to an os update then that would require a fix.

So you can check to see if that specific combination has an update related to the usb controller crashing. If not you might be able to request one if the problem is common enough.
