I have an old pc from 2007, Dell inspiron 545 with a Dell 0n826n motherboard.

It is running a pentium Dual E5400

My question is, can i buy a Q6600 and just drop it in? Can I use the existing cooler? Does it require any updating of my system?

Will the q6600 be a good upgrade or can anyone recommend another compatible cpu that my stock cooler will handle.

Thank you in advance

The short answer is no. 65w CPU vs 105w

The long answer is, you probably could if the MB supports it and you can squeeze a bigger cooler in it.

So the answer is, yes, technically it can take it. But good luck finding a dell cooler for it if it's a dell cooler.

The cooler looks like a typical Intel cooler but with different mounting hardware, so check if that's what you already have.

Personally, I don't think it is worth it unless you just feel like tinkering and you don't mind wasting $11 in the event it does not work.

OEM / pre-built systems are often designed to prevent this type of upgrade and Dell is known for this (i.e. Dell often limits power delivery to the PCIe slots (to just 25 watts in many models) of their systems to prevent end-users from upgrading their discreet graphics cards.

Probably not worth it for anything other than an experiment.

The mad scientist in me wants you to try it though....for whatever that's worth 😄

Good luck!

Just trying to avoid sending it to the landfill for as long as possible. Thanks for the feedback,  $11 has been spent.
