But get a motherboard with ECC (or without "non ecc") option.

Buy a complete package (MB+Ram+CPU) with "DDR3 ECC".

You can get a complete set with 16GB memory for around $100.

Search for "X79" and find a package that suites your budget.

check your local electronics recycling company.. I know here.. they have a store that you can buy used hardware and its usually cheap... I paid 120 (CAD)+shipping for a Xeon 1660v2, 32gb ram Lenovo ThinkStation S30 with a dead psu..  I had a spare psu and whammo.. new server that was so much more powerful than the 3 it replaced...
