I wonder if this whole gpu “shortage “

will lead to hurting the whole pc parts business the worst in the end?

I sure am not building now...not paying prices like that.

I get many industry’s are backed up.

but gpu’s are on a whole new level.

I personally think it’s miners doing most of the damage here, on top of a short supply.

but I could be wrong.

Once COVID is near its end, people will be going on vacations and such, leaving their 500lb PC at home. People will be mostly concerned about family and not computer parts, so lots of companies will be able to more or less catch up. That is unless a zombie apocalypse or something mild like that happens.

GPU shortage will affect different parts of the market differently. Some will be hardly affected, but PC gaming sure is in a tough spot especially for the self builder. The companies selling pre-built systems doesn't seem as bad. I wonder if there is more supply going to OEM parts than retail. Or are mixed retailers prioritising builds for sales since they can make more on a system than a single part?

But, keep trying. In a random check yesterday I saw a 3070 in stock and grabbed it, should be arriving today. It is much more expensive than the launch FE though but still far less than the going ebay rate.

I remember a similar scenario during the 1000 series release.

I also remember the cryptocurrencies crashing and watching a flood of 1080ti's on ebay for a very affordable price.

I'm sure at some point we'll see the same thing, but that might take a year or two

Probably not. A lot of companies don't make PC parts only. You still need a lot of enterprise hardware that is not linked to GPU market (example: you need 200 CPUs for a DC upgrade that has 0 GPUs). So no, not really. If anything, after this is over, there will be a boom in sales of other parts because everyone will want new hardware to compliment their super cheap 2nd hand mining 3080 😉
