Hello community I'm in need of a hand here.

I have a old computer and hard drives to go on it. I'm not even sure what topic I should put this under, but I wasn't too create my own server, directly connected to my Asus 66u router, so that any one that comes over and connects to the router can then access my server storage.

Will windows xp or 7 work, or do I need another os for it. Where do I start?

This should be in the Networking section. I'll move the thread.

XP and Win7 works. Just go to your drive or folder, right click > Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing and choose a name for it to share. In your network and sharing settings, you can choose for whether they need to login or not need a password at all to access your files from the network.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/
