Tell us the specs. The mobo may not support the CPU...

I am building it for my mom her old pc was vista. I think It would be easier for her to use that all she does is light photo editing and web browsing.

Id get windows 10. Lots of programs don't support vista, and its not supported, so its a security risk.

I don't particularly know what I could say here, as I don't know anything about the motherboard you're using and the CPU you're using. I suspect it might be too new to support Vista.

Also, I don't get why everyone's bitching about Vista. Install SP1 and it's 90% of the way to being Windows 7, just slightly more aesthetically pleasing.

There'll be a massive problem: You can't even install the most current system updates from ~4 years ago because Microsoft disabled the update servers for XP and Vista and it'll always throw an error. And manually installing updates on SP2 might also be a nightmare because there's over 200 of them, and in true Microsoft fashion they have to be installed in a specific order or they'll fail.

Either Microsoft loves me or that shit broke, because I can usually pull Vista updates just fine. Hell I'm setting up a Vista VM for something completely unrelated as we speak so I can actually update on if it works still, since the last time I did it was about a year ago.

Anyway for OP, I'm just gonna go on a limb and say that your hardware doesn't support Vista, since you said you're trying to use a 5th gen Intel platform. Usually anything after 2nd or 3rd gen doesn't have Vista drivers.

I assume it did because I can set up a Vista RTM, update it through to SP2 and can't install a single update as Windows Update doesn't find updates 🤣 Didn't work in the past 3 months.

Yep, guess they must have killed it somewhat recently then. This also threw a wrench into my plans because I didn't realize VMWare Workstation 16 killed off support for Vista. heckin gosh darn it

Yup. While Vista is officially listed in the OS list as an option, the VirtualBox drivers also never install due to signature errors in the virtualised Vista.
