Hello guys so I have this old computer of mine and I decided to use it for a simple gaming server so I have somewhere to play with my friends.I know that it’s not something special and it’s very old but it’s really taken care of.

I have a problem with it.

It worked very well but suddenly just from downloading Windows update the CPU is overheating.
This followed by shutting down couple of times.I tried running Ubuntu and it seemed to be a bit better than Windows 10. I cleaned it, I reinstall it , fans are working properly and there is no debris.

It’s dual core and one of the cores goes nuts simply downloading an update. It went up to 90C/194F.
Should I go full Linux with it ?

I hope you can help me so I can have a personal server to play on with my friends.

Stay safe! I hope you have a Great weekend , cheers!

Build: Lenovo ThinkCentre A62

AMD Athlon X2 5200B 2700Mhz 1MB, 8192MB DDR2

Well it looks like that case it's in is an absolute microwave, and knowing lenovo they almost certainly cooled your cpu with the bare minimum they could get away with, so It's possible that you have a passive heatsink, so even if there is some underlying problem, don't expect the pc to run extremely cool.

First of all I'd want to ask how well you maintained this build. It seems that it's from... 2012? Have you cleaned the internals and repasted the cpu? If not I'd do that first, dust or other matter could be blocking what little airflow that case may have, and if you haven't ever repasted that cpu- at least in recent memory- there's a decent chance that it's dry, which would significantly reduce how efficiently the thermal paste can transfer the heat at. Those are the most obvious things however, there may be some less obvious underlying issues.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

I’ll definitely do it. I was thinking about fans but sadly I can’t add more.

Repasted and now under load gets around 60-65 degrees Celsius. Out of the old paste somehow it managed to get removed by itself. I’ve put a new one and now it’s perfect. Thanks for the help guys. Wish you all the best!
