it's a mining program from ASUS, when i try downloading it, defender blocks it.

I can't even check with virus total or something, because it's not downloading, defender says

Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.D!ml

Any ideas, seems weird ASUS would spread Trojans..?

I think it is a community mining thing, right? Everything mining is malware to me, unless I have installed it myself. Unless you need it, make sure to remove that crap.

EDIT: Yeah, it is. Just read up on it. Community mining is stupid, you mine for those with little tiny cards and get a tiny percentage and the company takes the biggest cut. Basically you are donating money (your power bill) to ASUS on Quantumcloud (a different company). Not to mention that it will collect system data for sure.

well I'm obviously trying to install it right now...

the question is if it's actually malware and how would this go unnoticed for so long, ASUS is offering this service since 2018...

I just wanna try out this mining thing, and I have no idea how to set it up all by myself.

okay, so how is this different to mining in a "pool" which is apparently the way to go for mining isn't that the same thing, I'm gonna mine with lousy 1060's and 570's dragging me down lol...?

good call on the data collection tho, not fond of that... and I still have the problem windows defender is warning me of a 'severe threat'... 👀

ASUS has some other questionable things in their products like TrendMicro integration into some of their routers, which logs all traffic and sends it to a cloud (one you have no access to). Also the fact that their routers connect home and deliver data directly to the US gov if you enable their cloud AI stuff. Thankfully those can be disabled and blocked.

If you want to get into mining, read up on it and look into the mining section on the forum here. Mining in a pool nets you a tiny percentage of a large junk but you will also have to pay money to get your rewards transferred out if you want to use it for example. It's mostly a win-win for those creating it in the first place and the only winners in general are those who are contributing the most (mining farms with several thousand cards for example). Think of it like that, they get to dine out in style and you can lick of the dirty plate once they are done. There are mining communities that have better policies. However this one is a company and as such is profit driven, not community focused. I would not be surprised if the tool was full of spyware and backdoor Trojans to collect and sell your data.
