Hi,

wondering if someone can give me some further advice to diagnose what’s gone on with my system. Recently purchased a 3090 which has been running flawless the past 2 weeks, my pc suddenly rebooted itself but the lights on the GPU and fans aren’t moving. It’s clearly got no power.

I've tried the following:

- reseating the graphics card

- trying a different PCI lane

- trying a different rail on my power supply

no luck with any of these. My PSU is Corsair RM850X.

I'm starting to wonder if the GPU has just died on me. The system itself is booting fine.

You have a 850w power supply with a 3090? I guess the Nvidia website says it should be enough. If the system boots are you getting power everywhere else? If it was to just die maybe a deeper issue is underfoot.

So when you boot the pc do he lights and fans on the gpu turn on?

It is enough. I ran my 3090 ROG STRIX with a HX750 for like a month without any issues.

If you can try with another graphics card to determine if the system will boot with video output, then you'll know the GPU is dead. Although, this is starting to sound like the 3090 died on you. The RM850x is a single rail PSU so if anything, the whole PSU would not do anything (my suspicion, although I could be wrong).

This is my thinking. I have tried it on a different rail from the power supply, but nothing.

Then for sure, the GPU is dead.

Yeah you’re right actually it is single rail. So really if the PSU was at fault you’d expect no power to the rest of the system. The PSU I’ve had in my system for 2 years powering my 2080ti. Seems seriously unlucky 2 weeks after swapping a new GPU in it would fail. I don’t have any other parts lying around to test so looks like it is going to be a RMA job

Thats probably all it could give you..  extremely underpowered for that gpu...

That certainly depends on who you ask.

750w for the ROG STRIX non-OC model, when having a i7, is what ASUS themselves recommend. i9 or newer AMD CPU's, 850w is recommended.
I have a i7-8700K, no OC, so 750w is more than enough.

yeah, exactly it doesn't just depend on who you ask, but also the components and how 'spike happy' the card itself actually is.

which is why I would say generally a good 1000w psu would be on the safe side. I know you can get away with less... but some people don't and it's a bit dangerous game to play.

Well, true. There are many variables. But still, if you have a pretty standard i7 build, a 750W should be enough. If the PSUs dies, it must have been crappy.

I "tortur tested" my PC with my 3090 installed. Prime95 + Furmark for maximum power consumption;

I have 2 HDDs, 3 SSDs, 1 NVME, 4x8GB RAM 3600MHz, 8 fans, and I peaked at 690w consumption.

Oh and btw, my HX750 is nearly 8 years old.
