Budget (including currency): 1000 -1100 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: mainly for running virtual machines, video editing, programming and light 1080p /1440p gaming.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I'm currently using a laptop..so should start building from scratch. Considering the current situation of stock and prices.....I am looking to build it in a few months(eventually when prices get normal).

So it would be great if anyone can help me decide the parts which are best(intel or amd), give me options.

Thanks in advance!

I would ask once prices are normalized as we can't tell what the best deal is until we know what the prices are. Right now Intel is likely better only because they have better stock and availability. As for gpus it entirely depends on what is available and for what price at the time you plan to build. That is why I would recommend asking when you plan to build rather than us trying to predict what the best deal would be 2 months from now or whenever you decide to build.

Hmm alright. I guess I'll wait for a while then.

Thanks 🙂

Hey dude, prices won't "normalize" they'll just keep rising and supplies won't ever be the same again. I could explain why but no-one asked for an economics lesson.

The best advice I can give to anyone is buy the best of what's available now within your budget. Having an actual working PC is infinitely better than having a theoretical PC.

Ohh I see.....then can you give me any suggestions based on the current situation?

for example what kind of parts or specs I should be looking out for which will be useful.

Sure. I think the main point I would make is that you don't need the latest and greatest hardware to have a great PC experience.

Thinking about your requirements (virtual machines, video/image editing, programming and light 1080p /1440p gaming) I'd build something like this which doesn't include a GPU.

It's easy to put a pc part picker list together but it all falls apart when it comes to the GPU. GPUs are the biggest problem right now. You could trawl eBay and local ads for used GPUs like GTX 1080, Vega 56, Vega 64, RTX 2070, RX 5700.

no probs, there are lots of options like you could go AMD 2700X or 3700X CPU and a b450 or b550 motherboard but the main issue is going to be GPU and I feel the used market is the only real option at the moment. Even if suppliers restocked 3000 series RTX and 6000 series Radeon it's still going to be a really limited stock and they're still going to get bought up by opportunist scalpers and miners.

You're right. I paid £378 brand new for a Sapphire RX5700XT off Amazon in March 2020. If I wanted to buy one right now I'd be looking at eBay and around £500+

It's crazy. The revival of mining doesn't help.

Luckily the 5700 XT does everything I need it to and there's really no need for me to upgade at all

If you decide to go with an Intel build then get a better board. The one in the spec above is terrible, and probably won't even handle that cpu without throttling.

Also no point getting a 144Hz monitor if you only have the iGPU. You can pretty much forget about gaming unless you are fine with ~20fps at low settings.

The Phanteks AMP 650W is a better psu for the same price.

The BX500 is not a good SSD so I would avoid it. A Silicon Power A80, Sabrent Rocket (Not Q), Kingston A2000, Team MP34 etc would be better. Just look at reviews if not sure.

If you are not in a rush then I would just try and save up a bit more. The Intel 11th gen is out in March so that could impact current prices.

The R5 3600 would be a decent start point, but you would need a gpu as it doesn't have onboard graphics. Something like a GT710 for $30ish would mean the pc would be able to function, but you won't be gaming on a gpu like that. You could look for a 2nd hand gpu like an RX 570/GTX 1650/1660 etc but even those are going for stupid prices.

The 11th gen cpu's are due out in March. The new Z590 boards will accompany them, and some are available to buy now.

I get it.

I guess I'll wait for the 11th gen while looking out for deals or stock, even on some local store.

Thanks for the info

Appreciate it!
