Hey guys! I am not sure if im in the right topic. However, I kinda need some help regardless.

My grandma just moved out of our house, so I am taking her room, meaning I have to move EVERYTHING out of my room and into her old room. But this also includes the Internet. In her old room, theres the Cable line, and theres also another one right under, like whats in the image uploaded. I think I figured out that this is generally acting like a splitter, but hooked into the wall.

We also use DirecTv for our TV, and Cox for our internet. I tried to hook my Cox modem into the wall, and it didnt work. My family thought Cox lines just run through the whole house! And it might be true, but I also want to use her old DirecTv box. So when DirecTv came out here, either the cox thing is false, and DirecTv was just doing their job. But if the Cox part is true, I think DirecTv replaced the whole Cable lines which was attached in the picture. Now I can call Cox and make sure they add their line as well, which is no biggy. But I also would like a explanation, which is why im here lol.

Let me know if anything needs to be explained further.

Former Comcast tech here. The coax has to be activated and have some way to hook up to a 'tap', which is the source for your Internet. Usually it starts from a pole (or an underground port) and feeds to the side of your house where it branches off from there. If the coax in your picture is not attached somewhere along the line then it will not work. It also might not even be attached right behind the plate. Usually a tech has to come to your house and trace the lines and activate the one you want to use. You also have to consider signal integrity as well because the lines themselves may be bad or have too much 'noise' on them to be used anyway.

Edit: This'll likely get moved to either 'Networking' or 'Troubleshooting'

Pull the wall plate off the wall. See what's behind it. See in our living room we have dual coax like that but its because we used to have our modem in the living room as well as a TV box. That coax has to lead back some where. You need to determine where that is. In my case all the coax leads to the basement. We have a line coming in thru the foundation that carries the Comcast signal. Outside there is a box on the side of the house where the Comcast drop connects to the houses wiring. Inside that box is the grounding block, because coax should be grounded for safety.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
