Hello I'm building a 1 CPU 4 user type build.

why because I want to simplify my home computers.

what I want is tower to be in office

Wife office setup

 setup in lounge gaming myself

And remote gaming for each of my boys

How remote connection isn't issue but I'm seeking information in relation to what cpu to pick. It will b a threadripper but I'm finding it hard to work out if it can handle everything I'm after

All be VM based with passthroughs GPU and USB. Each setup

In system will have 4gpus pcie3 X 8 each (2x16 worth of bandwidth) as they will split down to 4 GPU x8.

1 USB passthrough for each of the remote spot 4 total. And 4 SSD for each operating system. Then on-top I'd like to fit in 4 SSD drive raid setup all systems can access off motherboard.

My question how many lanes and what cpu would be needed

My guess is

32 lanes for GPUs

16 lanes for OS ssds

16 lanes for raid ssds

4 lanes for controller USB

=70 lanes is that right

Would spec me to get a 3960x would allow 6 cores per system 16gb ddr4 each. A GPU each and a NAS for everyone to store there files .

Id really just suggest seperate systems, cheaper, easier to manage, less downtime, less power. Then get a laptop for the office setup, and 3 desktops.

But if you want to do this, do you really need vms? You can use programs like aster to split systems without vms. Then you can use 1 or 2 gpus, and won't need to add any usb cards

Why so many ssds? Id just get one big one and share it between vms or uses.

How much storage do you need? Id just get a few large ssds.

I could continue using 4 separate setups. But I want to make a unique setup going to cost alot more but I want to do this.

4 SSD one for each person's OS prob 1-2tb drives and a 4 SSD raid 10 so there's redundancy. As family photos work and school stuff can be stored

If the SSD raid to much for system I'll buy a external caddy and find a motherboard that has a 10gb ethernet connection, USB C, or thunder bolt. I'm prob going to end up with a workstation type motherboard don't care on lights ect

Id probalby just get a few large ssds, no reason to have one for each user. Then you can get hdds for mass storage.

But really id keep the seperate systems. Much cheaper, easier to manage, more reliable. There is a reason why this isn't very common in homes.

Do you need vms, id try doing this without vms first.
