Hey Everyone!

So i wanted to ask your opinion, i have plans to roll out a server for me and my family using used server hardware. But before i deploy it, i want to upgrade they home networking in my parents home to ensure that we don't encounter a bottleneck. So my first upgrade is to get a used enterprise networking switch to serve as the backbone of the network, and i am looking at getting a dell powerconnect 6248. I don't actually need all 48ports but i would rather have more ports then necessary in case, and it also looks looks better with 48ports since the 24 port has a huge gap. Anyway so i wanted your guys opinion on if this is a good switch ?

The main thing to be aware of with this sort of equipment, is its usually somewhat noisey. Potentially not great in a home environment unless you have a basement or something where the noise can be isolated away.
Otherwise, yea i'm sure its a pretty nice switch and pretty overkill for a home network. However it might be worth considering one with PoE capability, as unlike the layer3 features on high end switches, PoE can actually be handy at home if your deploying access points or cameras etc around the place that can use PoE.

Yeah, i am gonna put it in the crawl space at the bottom of the house. Do you have any recommendations for switches that have POE ? or would it just be easier to have the dell switch, and then a little switch for poe ? cause i am thinking of upgrading the wifi too.

well Dell do a PoE version of that switch called the 6248P as an example.

There are literally zillions of these switches though from all the big makes with varying feature sets that are all likely way overkill for household use.

I use an HP 1820-24G-PoE+ for instance.

Different models also have differing power outputs on the PoE side.

good switch, but your right.. its huge overkill..  enterprise switches are noisy and because so.. you will need to check on it constantly to make sure the fans have not failed or been choked with dust/cobwebs if its in a crawl space...

You can find fanless ones for just as cheap and you won't have to monitor them for failures as often.. because i'm assuming your not buying this dell switch new.. so it's already got years on its hardware..  I have an old linksys/cisco small business switch thats fanless and she's been choochin for YEARS without any problems.. its silent due to no fans..

or you can open it up... replace the fans with new quieter models and not worry about it.. if your handy in that sort of way.

I bought it used for 77 CAD with shipping included. I am gonna put it in the room beside the crawlspace so it will be cold but won't be as dusty.
