Howdy all!

Just wanted to pick the brains if people who know better than myself. I recently was helping a buddy troubleshoot an issue with a new build and I ended up with a RTX3080 to mess about with for a day or so. As all good friends do, I plugged it into my build and fired up Cyberpunk 2077 on the the highest of high settings as I only have a 1080p monitor. As soon as bullets began to fly and a few flashbangs went off, my machine quickly ran out of actual power from the wall. This was expected as I only have a 650watt Aerocool P7 PSU and knew with a 9900KF and RTX3080, I'd be looking at all of that 650watt disappearing. This was confirmed by PC Part Picker's calculator gave me the number of 594 watts. I know this is a rough guild but sounds like the number I'd expect with the 9900K family and its legendary power thirst along with a relatively chilly room temp which I believe 30-series cards love. Nothing was overclocked but my CPU has a slight under-volt (1.2-1.25 volts think, will need to look it up).

The question is, since I am toying with going for a 3070 (as I feel a 3080 for what I'd use it for would be a waste and don't really want to upgrade my screen but wouldn't mind going to 1440p down the line), is it worth swapping out my 650 to a 750 or 850 PSU if Part Picker is giving around 500watts for my build with a 3070 to keep everything happy or is 150watts enough headroom. Currently, using the calculator, my PC with a 2060 Strix OC is around the 450watt mark.

Cheers!

for 3060 ti and 3070 you will be fine with the 650we psu.

for 3080 oyu want to get 850w since it has power spikes to over 600w, if i remember correctly.

do not use calculators.

at gaming without overclocking your cpu and 3070 are pulling around 400-450. can spike up to 500w.

I Use my knowledge as business owner and self taught technician aswell as an AI to help people. AI might be controversial but it actually works pretty well 90% of the time.
