If an Intel CPU gets too hot, it will automatically slow down to help protect against long term damage.

If you are worried about your CPU, you should probably not be overclocking it, especially with the Intel heatsink and fan. Those coolers are junk and often times are barely adequate at default clocks.

Is a tiny increase in performance worth the risk. If yes, start overclocking.

Advisable to use a better aftermarket cooler.

Also, what motherboard are you using (e.g. brand and model).

What kind of temperatures are you getting now with the stock intel cooler, and the CPU running at stock?

What are you idle (e.g. sitting on the Desktop) and load (e.g. gaming) temperatures?

Pretty similar to my set-up of my second system, but I'm running an ASUS Maximus VII Hero.

CPU and motherboard is capable of doing 4.4 GHz+ (I've got my i5-4690K running at 4.8 GHz for years now)

You are already getting close to 80*C while gaming, there isn't much headroom left in that stock cooler.

If you want to overclock, I would recommend that you "invest" in an aftermarket CPU cooler -- doesn't have to be anything super expensive.

$40 ~ $70 range should get you something pretty good.

Of course, if you want, you can always go $70+, and get something like a 240mm or 280mm AIO...

At around $40 USD:

  • Arctic Freezer 34 eSports
  • DeepCool Gammaxx 400
  • Cryorig M9i
  • Phanteks PH-TC12DX
  • Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo (2x fan version of the Freezer 34)

$60 ~ $70 USD:

  • Noctua NH-U12S
  • Scythe Fuma 2
  • Noctua NH-U14S
  • Noctua NH-U9S Chromax.black
  • CoolerMaster MasterLiquid ML240L RGB (240mm AIO)
  • CoolerMaster MasterLiquid LC240E RGB (another 240mm AIO)
  • Phanteks PH-TC14PE

For a i5-4690K, something like the Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo should have absolutely no problems.

Plus, it comes in a couple of color options (if that matters).

Image result for arctic freezer 34 esports duo

From the $70 range, I'd go with a tower cooler over the AIO options, persoanally.

Noctua NH-U12S, Noctua NH-U14S or Phanteks PH-TC14PE would be the picks.

Phanteks cooler has a couple of color options, too.

I know the Noctua brown is not for everyone...
