Current Upgrading Plan, Yay or Nay?

Go to solution Solved by jaslion,

Don't bother upgrading this. Is this for games? If so no cpu upgrade will help at all. The phenoms are just too old and lack instruction sets that causes even generic programs to just not run on them anymore or if they do terribly slowly.

This is a system that is basically use it till it dies but don't spend money on it. Just save up is the best advice I can give you. Any money spent on this is wasted. At best get a ssd as that is reusable in the future.

It's simply put to old to be worth any money invested into it.

currently planning out my upgrading plan for this old PC i have. taking into consideration my motherboard (foxconn 2ab1), it seems that i'm very limited. the main cutoff is the cpu has to be anthlon II or phenom II (both am3 or am2+), so i decided to settle with the best phenom II series cpu i could find, which is a amd phenom ii x4 980 (or the black edition, depends on how my good deals search goes). after that, im going for a better gpu that will work really well with the cpu im planning on buying. i got recommended a gtx 700 series card (forgot exactly which oe it was, think it was a gtx 750ti), so im probably going to settle around there. finally, after the cpu and gpu have been upgraded, im going to get a better motherboard. still figuring out if im forced to get an am3 motherboard with my current plan, or if its fine to upgrade to am4

does this plan seem alright? any problems that stand out, or any recomendations?

for reference:

current money looking to spend (for the cpu and gpu combined): less than $120

current gpu: geforce gt610

current cpu: amd phenom II x4 840T

current mobo: foxconn 2ab1

since this is a PC that was given to me, i havent inspected the rest of the parts clearly, so if you have questions about any other parts, i'll attempt to answer as best as i can

makes sense. do you think that any gpu upgrade would be "worth it" (and by worth i mean it uses the cpu as much as possible and isnt overpaying for an experience i can get with a cheaper gpu)

Well what do you wanna do with it? I guess play some games? What games? Don't expect to really get further than 2015 with that cpu and keep things mostly playable. (stuff like gta v is already very dicey as it's a older game that has kept being updated).

I mean if you can snag a gtx 750, rx550, rx560, gtx 1050(ti) for cheap sure but like you are very cpu limited. Suprised genshin launches on it and doesn't have an issue with the cpu lacking a fair bit of stuff.

oh yeah genshin does launch. 30-60 fluctuating on the lowest graphics hell yeah

so it looks like the original gtx 750 ti recommendation was good. i'll look around for one. did a quick scan on ebay a few hours ago and saw some for around $50, so i'll look into them. thanks

If you don't have an ssd get one too something like a wd blue or mx500 is good. Main important thing is to have a ssd with dram and not pure qlc flash storage to prevent the cpu to have to do any caching
