Check PC parts for rendering

Hi,

Not sure if that is the right section.

I just bought a PC mostly for programing and video editing.

PC parts are:

Ryzen 9 5900x with MSI 240R AIO

16 GB ram (2x8) CL18

Asus x570 tuf gaming plus

Samsung 970 evo plus 500GB

Finnaly my bisgest shame (ZOTAC GAMING GeForce GTX 1660 Twin Fan)

 

I was planning for an RTX 3080 for it but unfortunately could not find any GPU at all out of prebuilt,after  waited 3 month and couldn`t find any I had to get the 1660 and it was overpriced too.

now is it normal to render a video from "After Effect" that one minute long on these parts in 1 hour 40 mminutes?

Same video on my laptop which was old and slow (3gen I5, 8GB, Readon 7670m) take 6 hours and 40 minutes, So does it make sense?

Depends on the quality, resolution, bitrate, what accelerators you have active, effects,... you are doing with it.

it`s just countdound wall watch on 1080P, bitrate 20 and GPU accelerator on...should I switch?

if your encoding video with a codec accelerated using the GPU, such as nvenc than yes gpu will make a big difference. gpu upgrade would make a big difference

also check its using the gpu during export

run the command to see if the gpu is encoding

 

cd "c:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVSMI"

nvidia-smi.exe encodersessions

 

also try downloading this additional software to enable nvenc, if after effects doesnt use by default. you can see if it speeds up encoding by following guide below after downloading and installing the voukoder software

however, as the guide said this is only part of the process the filters and amount of processing you are doing to each frame can significantly slow down the time to complete your project.

did you order the 1660 ? Because at this point it makes more sense pony up 200$ -300$to get the 5950X and OC it a little bit (also try to pair it with fast ram so something like 3800Mhz cl14 would be ideal although pricey, maybe you could compromise on getting the same speed with a little bid bigger latency ) 

 

e.g a BMW render on blender will take about 1min 15 sec for a 1660 ti and about 1 min and 25 sec for a stock 5950 if you overclock it obviously you could get slightly better results... 

 

The reason I say this is because in that way you more or less will do the job in the same amount of time while having the beefiest steup (minus the GPU) and in that way you can wait for the madness to end and prices to drop and buy a GPU in the future. 

 

But as you probably know 5950x has no igpu so just find some cheap $20-40$ 2nd hand video adapter (e.g GT 740 or something like that) to be able to have a monitor signal in the meantime.
