IVe been saving up for a while now for an upgrade to my current system. Im currently running an Intel i7 4790, Asus Q87m-e mobo with 32gb 1600mhz ram and a RX580 8gb in an Antec DF600 Flux Case. Do i actually need to upgrade? What would i upgrade to for gaming? The system tends to run a bit loud and noisy.

Games Played, F12020, GTA Online, Red dead Online, Rocket League, COD

Im currently playing most games between 75-90hz, my gpu cant keep up in the games i play over 100hz, i have 165hz monitor.

In that case you would need both CPU and GPU upgrade. Honestly I would just suggest to save for a bit longer and probably upgrade the whole thing at once. By getting new CPU, motherboard and RAM right now you gain almost nothing, then by the time you finally get to upgrade your graphics card, there will likely be new CPUs around as well.

And if you get new GPU right now it will be held back by your CPU so again you will see little benefit.

It really comes down to what kind of games you play since some benefit more from faster CPU, other from faster GPU.

With this combination, there's no real need to replace the 4790 just yet. 4c/8t will do with a 580.

If you intend to upgrade to a Radeon 6700XT for instance, when it comes out, you'll want to pick something newer.

I'd say a Ryzen 3600 (perhaps a 5600 if that ever comes out) or i5-10400F would be perfect upgrade candidates

for not a ton of money.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

4790 still got some gas left in the tank. You could probably even upgrade to something like the Radeon 6600 or Nvidia RTX 3060 when they come out, or a second hand 5700 XT/RTX 2070.

Your GPU can't keep up because the RX580 isn't really a high refresh GPU, outside of possibly some kinds of esports titles.

See below: Unless you're pairing it with an RTX 3070+, you can still get some life out of your system if it's just gaming.

I recommend a modest GPU upgrade, and upgrading your other components such as SSD, input devices, etc, and waiting out for the end of 2021 because there should be some really good compelling stuff then.

The LTT demonstrates a good real-world scenario, whereas the GN video shows that even with something unrealistic like a 2080ti (~RTX 3070) it still manages "okay". Keep in mind they are using 1080p/medium to purposefully stress CPUs. If you're playing at higher resolutions, it won't be as obvious. With the 4770k (slower than yours) at stock settings, it's almost pulling 170+ fps in F1 and a 2080ti.

Since you have an i7, I think you can last at least until the end of the year.

NP - so the 4790 non-k, assuming it's not being power limit throttled by an OEM motherboard, should still perform pretty good. It has a boost of 4.0ghz, which is 100mhz higher than the 4770K at stock settings. So if you're looking at these benchmarks, you'll be a tiny bit above what that is.

In the first video, it's a 3770k, which is an older architecture and also only 3.9ghz at stock settings.

i have a coolermaster hyper 212 cooler on the 4790 and i have set the cpu to 4.0ghz all core constant. its made a big difference in system responsiveness but heat is and noise is now my major issue. Ive been looking for a decent future proof AIO but in South Africa, we currently have a supply issue

devil's canyon was always a hot one - could be the TIM under the heat spreader is failed/failing at this point though

Id get any thing thats recent from intel or amd. Selling my 4790k to get a 8700k was a great upgrade for me. The cpu couldnt handle a 1080 so it was time to move on.

Id do the same with the gpu, even with the crappy market. Plenty of upgrade options out there.
