How do sas drives work?

So if i have a backplane that connects wit hthe sas connectors but powers and connests using sata and sata power do i need those sata conections to come from a sas card or woulda normal chipset on a consumer motherboard work fine?

If you want to use sas drives, you need a sas controller, not matter what cables your using as the signals are different.

yea  if you want sas drives you need a sas controller, but if your using sata drive, you can use the sata ports on your board.

I plan on building a nas with referb sas drives.

Just to add to this topic . I wanna know where can i find resources which can explain to me the different types of cables for SAS. I new to SAS mainly due to my work. I have a few industrial machines running SAS mechanical drives. I bought a SAS SSD recently tried to plug it into my Xeon workstation with on board SAS controller but it it wont even detect.. can anyone help with this ..

Try checking out your bios settings for that mobo. there might be a setting that has them disabled.
