Other details: (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I just picked up a new 1080p 144hz Monitor (have two more on the way) I am going to school and starting a career in IT but I have been out of the gaming world for several years. I am married with kids so my going out time is behind me so time to get back to gaming! I have mostly played MMO games which this machine will do, but I want to play more graphically impressive games too. As I said I have a family so funds for fun are limited. So I thought I would see if any of my components are usable in the modern gaming world. Current OS is Linux Ubuntu 20.04 This started life as a windows 7 machine in 2011 or 2012 but it got to a point where it took 5 min or so to load. It runs pretty well on linux.  Might possibly upgrade to windows but I figure I can likely do anything I need to do with a VM.  I have not tried gaming on a VM yet does that work?

An ssd would likely resolve the load issues.

Now is not a good time to be getting a new cpu or gpu. Supply is problematic. As a result prices have gone through the roof.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

If I remember correctly, CPU can support only one memory type, so is this CPU DDR3 only?

Feel free: To ask any question, no matter what question it is, I will try to answer. I know a lot about PCs but not everything.

PC configs I used before:

  1. Pentium G4500 | 4GB/8GB DDR4 2133Mhz | H110 | GTX 1050
  2. Ryzen 3 1200 3,5Ghz / OC:4Ghz | 8GB DDR4 2133Mhz / 16GB 3200Mhz | B450 | GTX 1050

Yeah the Ram is DDR3

I added a new 512gb ssd

as well as another 16gb of DDR3

also upon further inspection I found that I had a couple fans that were completely seized up.  So in the process of installing 4 new 120mm fans.  Upgraded WiFi card to a WiFi 6 with Bluetooth will be going in as well.

Having a bit of an issue with the new os install...  used my usb boot disk to install Ubuntu 20.04.  Install says it was successful however after setting up the boot order in the bios and selecting the SSD, I reboot and end up with just a black screen with a flashing white underscore in the top left.
