Aorus B450 Pro non wifi. R5 3600x. 16GB 3000CL16 DDR4. 2060.

PC has been working without hitches non stop. I decided to restart to install an update. And then...

It didn't turn on. Pressing the power button does nothing. No fanspin, no lights, no debug leds. It just doesn't respond.

I suspected the power button might be defective so I shorted the power pins to no avail.

Removing the gpu, swapping ram sticks, using only one stick in different slots, etc. Nothing worked.

The only scenario in which the motherboard responds is when I remove the cpu from its socket. After that, the motherboard boots up, fans start spinning (which leads me to believe that the button is working fine, and the psu is not dead)

Is the cpu defective? or is it motherboard socket issue? how would i go in evaluating which would be the issue?

i dont have the resources or access to a different mobo/cpu. We're in lockdown too so it'll be tricky to take this rig anywhere.

any clues?

Also, if it's a hardware issue, why did it seem to work PERFECTLY until i decided to restart for an update? it was flawless

The failure could have happened after you turned on the PC,or after you restarted.

What power supply do you have?

What was the update?  Windows or Bios?

ok, motherboard out of the case on a cardboard box.

only cpu, cpu cooler, one stick of ram, AND gpu.

8pin 12V cpu plugged in. 24Pin ATX plugged in.

I plug the power supply on. mobo flashes for a second before i even get to hit the power button. then nothing.

doesnt respond to power button either.

i remove the cpu from the socket. try power button again. still no life (before, it used to power on without the cpu, now it doesn't.)

im aghast. what could lead to a perfectly working system to just instantaneously combust and stop working all of a sudden just because windows update decided to restart my computer?
