PCI-e cables fit?

Budget (including currency): 4000 USD

Country: Switzerland

Hi All,

I have a quick question as I am finishing my build and when I was looking to plug in the PCI-e cables into the GPU they seem to have different connector shapes. I checked and this is the case for both the PSU cables as well as for the Cable Mods that I bought. Basically from the picture I see the following:

PCI-e cable shapes:

Top Row: Notch Notch Square Square

Bottom Row: Square Notch Notch Notch

GPU connector shapes:

Top Row: Square Square Notch Notch

Bottom Row: Notch Notch Notch Square

To be honest I'm also a bit afraid to force the cables in as this was quite an expensive GPU and wouldn't want to damage anything. What do you think? Is this normal?

Kind regards,

Eddy

When you turn it around to plug it in, it will fit fine.

but that is not supposed to be turned around actually as it plugs in with the plastic thing at the top.

Cable mod replacement cables have two sides, one that goes into your PSU the other that goes into your videocard. Are you sure you're looking at the right end?

you sure that's PCIE 8-pin and not CPU 8-pin?

difference is (usually) pcie is split into 6+2 while CPU is split into 4+4

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Yes I'm positive, the other end that goes into the PSU cable wouldn't even have the external connectors to go into the PSU. See picture with the other end as well.

The PSU cable is 6+2 and it says PCI-e on it whereas the Cable mod has full 8-pin

if it says so then it should be right

the fit should be tight but not SO tight that you have to push like you're giving birth

some friction is normal and fine

one more way to know it's a pcie 8-pin is to look for this bridge, two pins should have plastic connecting them, corresponding to this hole

image.png.45acbfb1fb68e8a66490199543ef18af.png the picture of your cable is too blur for me to be sure

The PSU cable is definitely PCI-e as it says so on the cable itself and it does have the bridge that connects those 2 pins (being a 6+2 format) but the cable mod has full 8 pins. Nonetheless, both the end of the Cable mod and the PSU cable that should go into the GPU have the same structure which somehow is different then those shapes on the GPU connectors.

i think the shape doesnt match...? dont quote me on that

but if it says it's PCIE then it should be fine

ah okay, they are cablemod extension cables. yeah, those don't go into the PSU.

Looking a bit closer at your pictures, I'm unsure what the issue then is.

it's a bit low res, because of the left pic being a bit low res, but it seems to match fine, does it not?

OMG I feel so dumb, you are right, I needed to check the opposite sides. Thank you so much and apologies for my stupidity

always better to doublecheck when in doubt!
