Buzzing noise after a game crashes

I'm encountering a problem where a game will fail to respond and has to be closed through task manager.

Whenever a game crashes, there will be a constant and continuous buzzing sound, heard from my headphones.

This has happened in multiple games (Mass Effect, Skyrim, and Civ V). To clarify, the buzzing starts when the game fails to respond, not when I terminate the process. The only way I've found to eliminate the noise is to restart the whole system. Logging out doesn't seem to work.

 

A quick google search has demonstrated that this has happened across multiple games, on a wide variety of pc configurations. The symptoms are similar, but every thread attributes it to a different cause. Does someone who has actually resolved this issue know what is causing noise and how to stop it from happening?

The buzzing noise comes from your headphones?

 

I would be thinking along the lines of driver issues... Did you change anything before the crashes?

 

If it was hardware could be a lot of things but what is your audio set up? Mobo, Sound card?
